New Zealand survey exposes gap between preparedness beliefs and household action

NEMA released its 2026 preparedness survey: 89% of respondents supported several days of household self-sufficiency, but fewer than half had prepared during the past year.

Only 40% reported regular household preparedness discussions. NEMA highlighted cost as a barrier and urged families to begin with a free plan.

What changed

Who this is for

Households and community preparedness organisers.

What the official guidance says

  • Agree how household members will communicate and reunite.
