New Zealand’s ShakeOut campaign draws more than 615,000 sign-ups

NEMA announced that more than 615,000 people had registered for its annual earthquake and tsunami drill, scheduled for 21 October at 1:30 pm. Households, schools and workplaces were encouraged to practise together.

NEMA uses ShakeOut to make protective actions familiar before an earthquake occurs. The announcement also explains alternative actions for people who cannot perform the standard drill.

What changed

The 20 October publication reports registrations and promotes a scheduled drill; it does not establish actual attendance. This is preparedness practice, not a changed stockpiling duration.

Who this is for

National earthquake and tsunami preparedness exercise.

Dates & context

The campaign is distinct from New Zealand’s standing emergency-supplies guidance. Its value as an update is the specific exercise and public participation, not a claim that household advice suddenly changed.
