Japan issues preventive-preparedness request

Japan’s disaster-management agency issued a coordinated preparedness request to residents, local authorities and national ministries.

Residents are asked to secure furniture, review hazards and evacuation routes, prepare supplies and participate in drills. Prefectures and ministries are asked to report progress at year-end.

What changed

The 2 November request accompanies the establishment of the national disaster-management agency and sets follow-up expectations.

Who this is for

Residents, local authorities, national ministries and businesses in Japan.

Dates & context

The request reiterates at least three days of water and food, preferably one week, plus three litres of water per person daily including cooking. This is not evidence that those supply durations are new, or a prediction that a particular disaster is imminent.
